Welcome to Jackie Maddison Counselling
My name is Jackie (she/her) and I am a counsellor for adults working in Plymouth, Devon or online.
When life presents you with challenges, it can be hard to take the first step in seeking support. I believe that the counselling space is uniquely important because it is where you can bring your true self without fear of being judged. Bringing your true self can be a long process for some people, and this is okay. It is natural to feel nervous or wary if you have never experienced counselling before, but I hope that you’ll allow me to be alongside you whilst you explore who you are and what has brought you to counselling.
I am passionate about counselling and the changes people can make when they are given the best environment for them. This is key in my belief, as I understand that everybody has different needs and I will always adapt my way of working with you to suit who you are and what you need. I will always provide you with a safe and supportive environment to explore and I do this from an integrative perspective which means I draw on a variety of ways of working. My approach is based around who you are as a unique person, and can support a variety of different challenges like depression, anxiety and stress. We will agree on how we work together, and what sort of pace you are comfortable with. There is nothing that is too much or too small to bring to counselling.
I work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and welcome those from the neurodivergent and LGBTQI+ communities. My training included working with the LGBTQI+ community through the Intercom Trust based in Exeter, supporting individuals with gender identity and sexuality. I am committed to providing an inclusive, gender affirming and neuro-affirming counselling space. Having lived experience of neurodivergence, I am passionate about working with autistic and/or ADHD adults and have a deep understanding of the strengths and sometimes challenges being neurodivergent can bring. In our sessions, I want to know what it means for you personally.
If you are neuro-curious and would like to explore your neurotype, or you are self-identified as neurodivergent and looking into pursuing a diagnosis of autism or ADHD, please feel assured that I will validate this and support you in understanding yourself on this journey. Equally, not pursing a diagnosis but still wanting to explore this is welcome.
As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I follow their ethical framework which you can view here.
I have experience supporting people with a wide range of issues and I welcome you no matter what you're experiencing. Here are are few of the difficulties that can be supported through counselling:
For issues that may be related to past experiences in your life, the process of counselling can help you become aware of difficulties or patterns that are coming up for you in your everyday life and I will work with you in a trauma-informed way to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and skills to cope. I will always offer you a confidential, non-judgemental and open-minded space.
